A loose lower denture can result from changes in the supporting ridge, worn denture teeth, an uneven bite, or problems with the base. The appropriate solution may be an adjustment, reline, replacement denture, or implant stabilization. An examination is needed before choosing among them.
Healthy Habit Dental Care evaluates the denture and the tissues supporting it. Adding implants should not substitute for correcting a damaged base or an unsuitable bite.
Why Does a Lower Denture Move?
The lower denture shares space with the tongue and surrounding muscles and rests on a ridge that changes after tooth loss. Movement can become more noticeable as fit deteriorates. A denture that worked well previously may no longer match the tissues underneath.
Tell the dentist whether it lifts while speaking, rocks during chewing, or repeatedly causes soreness in one area. Bring the denture even if you have stopped wearing it.
When Might a Reline Help?
A reline changes the surface that contacts the gums. It may be suitable when the teeth and bite remain acceptable but the base no longer fits well. It does not correct every problem, including severely worn teeth, fractures, or a fundamentally unsuitable design.
When Is a New Denture More Appropriate?
Replacement may be considered if several parts of the denture are worn or compromised. The dentist should explain what can be reused and what needs to change. Compare the expected benefit of a repair with the cost and prognosis of starting with a new restoration.
What Do Mini Implants Add?
For suitable patients, mini implants can provide retention points for a snap-in denture. The denture remains removable for cleaning. Available bone, health history, and restorative space determine whether this is appropriate and how many implants are needed.
Some existing dentures can be converted; others cannot. See our denture conversion checklist before assuming that implants are the only additional component required.
What Should You Avoid Doing at Home?
Do not file the base, bend attachments, or use household adhesives. Increasing pain, an ulcer that persists, swelling, or drainage should be assessed. If your denture already attaches to implants, a new looseness needs a different evaluation from a conventional loose denture.
Ask for an estimate that includes the denture work as well as any implants and follow-up. The goal is stable function with a design you can maintain.
